Mario had searched high and low, frantically trying to find Princess Peach, and it took him quite a while to do so. He had heard about Bowser kidnapping her (yet AGAIN) when he had been in the middle of a rather great nap. By the time he arrived at the castle, Bowser's ships were already far off into the distance. They had taken the princess and, oddly enough, a large number of supplies from the castle kitchens. They had even kidnapped one of the chefs.
Though Mario could not think of any possible reason to explain the stealing of ingredients or the kidnapping of Chef Zess T., he was not unused to Bowser trying his clawed hand at the prospect of forcibly making Princess Peach his own. Mario was a courageous fellow, though, and he immediately departed in the direction that the ships had left to retrieve her.
